ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON DAIRY FARMS IN THE NETHERLANDS AND ISRAEL AgEcon
Van Asseldonk, Marcel A.P.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M.; Dijkhuizen, Aalt A.; Tomaszewski, Michael A.; Gelb, Ehud M..
Effects of a number of information technology applications were quantified empirically which were implemented on Dutch and Israeli dairy farms. Data comprised annual farm performances from 1987 to 1996, and included both adopters and nonadopters as well as farm results before and after adoption. Significant effects were estimated, making a differentiation between the different technologies.

MEASURING STRATEGIC INTENT IN THE SOUTH TEXAS FOOD MARKETING INDUSTRY AgEcon
McBryde, Gary L..
Binomial and multinomial logit analysis is applied to data collected from questionnaires to measure strategic intent in the food marketing industry. Questions were framed based on data from the U.S. Department of Commerce's "County Business Patterns" reports and from best-practice studies. Question topics were placed into a competitive strategy framework following the 1998 work of Porter. Results indicate a strategic focus on outbound logistics and market pricing at the direct value level. Indirect activities focus on human capacity and firm infrastructure, particularly expanding internationally. Firms are adopting information technologies as a competitive strategy, and are doing so as part of a combined strategy to develop human assets.

A MODEL OF INFORMATION AND I.T. ADOPTION IN FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Mohtadi, Hamid; Kinsey, Jean D..
Evidence from the Food Supply chain suggests that food retailers often exhibit a reluctance to share information with their suppliers even when this benefits both parties. For example, inventory coordination and reduced costs may be realized by adopting appropriate supply chain management technologies such as cooperative planning, forecasting, and replenishment. This behavior is explained by viewing information as a strategic asset and modeling information exchange and the corresponding adoption of information technologies and analysis as a strategic game, i.e., an economic model where food retailers and their suppliers operate with uncertainty. The game is based on stylized facts from the food industry. Some key results from the game model are: (a) under...

Projecting Productivity Growth: Lessons from the U.S. Growth Resurgence AgEcon
Jorgenson, Dale W.; Ho, Mun S.; Stiroh, Kevin J..
This paper analyzes the sources of U.S. labor productivity growth in the post-1995 period and presents projections for both output and labor productivity growth for the next decade. Despite the recent downward revisions to U.S. GDP and software investment, we show that information technology (IT) played a substantial role in the U.S. productivity revival. We then outline a methodology for projecting trend output and productivity growth. Our base-case projection puts the rate of trend productivity growth at 2.21% per year over the next decade with a range of 1.33 - 2.92%, reflecting fundamental uncertainties about the rate of technological progress in IT-production and investment patterns. Our central projection is only slightly below the average growth...

A Preliminary Assessment of the Potential Role of Information and Communication Technology in Support of Poverty Alleviation Policies for Rural Populations--AGRI-ICT Project Report AgEcon
Bourgeois, Robin.
This working paper summarizes the results of a structured collective exercise where participants first presented their country reports and experience. A cross-country comparison was then conducted, item by item in order to identify common and specific problems. A brainstorming approach enabled to discuss possible solutions and strategies to be further tailored for each country. Finally, in a follow up step these strategies were synthesized into a more comprehensive framework intended to provide basic guidelines for other Asian and Pacific countries in the field of ICT to support decision-making for poverty alleviation in rural areas where poor populations rely on the CGPRT sector.

Coordenação do sistema da carne bovina no Reino Unido: implicações da rastreabilidade e da tecnologia de informação AgEcon
Machado, Rosa Teresa Moreira; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
This paper discusses the traceability concept in the food business. Based on the transaction costs economics, it describes the adoption of traceability mechanisms in the UK beef market and examines the effects on the governance mechanisms in the production and distribution chain. The basic hypothesis is that, in the absence of information technology (IT), strictly coordinated mechanisms will occur. As the use of IT spreads, a decrease in information asymmetry and, consequently, more flexible governance structures may be observed.

Companies and Regulators in Emissions Trading Programs AgEcon
Kruger, Joseph.
Much has been written about the economic and environmental performance of U.S. emissions trading programs for "acid rain" (sulfur dioxide) and nitrogen oxides. Less explored have been the unique roles and interactions of environmental regulators and the companies they regulate. I first examine how these roles change the way that regulators and companies operate within their own organizations and with each other. Next, I use examples from U.S. trading programs to illustrate the design and administrative features that allow program administrators and industry to best fulfill their respective roles. Finally, I examine briefly whether these features are present in the EU Emissions Trading System and determine the implications for its effectiveness.

An Outlook for the Biofuels Industry in the Southern United States AgEcon
Crooks, Anthony C.; Dunn, John R..
Two seemingly unrelated topics are discussed- an outlook for biofuels in the southern United States, along with an overview of the important role that information technology is playing in the fuel ethanol industry. The outlook discussion is limited to issues involving the two principal biofuels, fuel ethanol and biodiesel, and their respective feed stocks, corn and soybean oil. The two topics are linked with a description of how information technology (IT) has enabled the development of the fuel ethanol franchise and a discussion of how IT is changing the very nature of biofuel operations.

An Evaluation of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Practices among Agribusiness Firms AgEcon
Torres, Antonio, Jr.; Akridge, Jay T.; Gray, Allan W.; Boehlje, Michael; Widdows, Richard.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) has received much attention in the business press as a management process to enhance firm performance. This research highlights differences between groups of respondents who believe their firm's CRM program is performing at a high level, as compared to those not satisfied with the performance of their CRM initiative. Cluster analysis was used to develop a taxonomy of respondents based on their perceived CRM performance. The resulting clusters are then profiled on both demographic variables as well as a core set of activities/behaviors to better understand key differences in the CRM programs of agribusinesses.

CASOS SOBRE A RASTREABILIDADE BOVINA EM EMPRESAS RURAIS INFORMATIZADAS: IMPACTOS GERENCIAIS AgEcon
